Processing the feelings helps them to feel better and closer to their care receiver. • Advice-giving too soon – “Why don’t you just…?” This can make the other person feel like their emotions are being overlooked in favor of solving the problem. While some of this is helpful to say aloud when a friend or loved one is upset, much of it will typically be expressed through body language, attention, attitude, presence, tone of voice, and so on. The main thing is that the ideas get expressed in a way that the other person receives them, whether that expression is verbal or nonverbal, explicit or implicit.
This doesn’t have to be reserved for highly classified personal information. Emoting means openly expressing your feelings, specifically, your feelings in response to another person’s experience. Emoting is distinct from Copying – Copying mimics another person’s reaction; Emoting reveals your own. Aside from filling in or assisting someone, there are plenty of other meaningful, albeit less flashy, ways to Take Action in your relationships. The actions taken are almost always welcomed in these sorts of scenarios, and their impact often far exceeds the effort that goes into them. This isn’t about just being helpful; these actions show that you value, care about, and are emotionally attuned to the other person.

Guilting yourself into gratitude is not an honest behavior. Telling a child, for example, that they should stop thinking What Is Meetheage and Who Is It For? what they are thinking and be grateful only goes so far—comparing a child with others who live in poverty isn’t a winning strategy. There is a point where forcing gratitude becomes delegitimizing. A person cannot be responsible for feeling grateful.
Feeling Seen And Appreciated
Nonverbal invalidation is powerful and includes rolling of the eyes and drumming of fingers in an impatient way. If someone checks their watch while you are talking with them, that is invalidating. Showing up at an important event but only paying attention to email or playing a game on the phone while there is invalidating, whether that is the message the person meant to send or not.

At that point you could use a Level 5 or 6, depending on how you feel about losing a pet. Radical genuineness is when you understand the emotion someone is feeling on a very deep level. Radical genuineness is sharing that experience as equals. Mindreading is guessing what another person might be feeling or thinking. People vary in their ability to know their own feelings. For example, some confuse anxiety and excitement and some confuse excitement and happiness.
If the need to belong is a fundamental human drive, so too is the tendency to compare oneself to others.
